Derek Walcott, Nobel-Prize winning poet and playwright, wrote his first poem at the age of 14. Before the age of 20, he self-published his first poetry collection and also produced his first play.
Walcott was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his reimagining of The Odyssey (Omeros), his books of plays (including his most well-known play Dream on Monkey Mountain) and poetry, and his autobiographical verse Another Life.
He also receive a MacArthur Foundation Grant in 1981 and the T.S. Eliot Prize for White Egrets, his 2011 poetry collection.
